What is Dignity Action Day?

The United Kingdom celebrates Dignity Action Day on 1st February every year as a day to preserve the dignity of those in care.

Dignity Action Day gives the health and social care workers and the public an opportunity to help preserve the dignity of the people who use care services.

This year, the theme of Dignity Action Day is ‘put undignified care to bed’. This campaign encourages people to wear red on this day and donate to the cause. This campaign works towards developing resources to improve the quality of care and the experiences of people using care services. These include NHS hospitals, community services, care homes, and home care and support services.

At Crouched Friars, it is part of our ethos to ensure that all our residents are cared for in a way that values and upholds their dignity.

Here are a few ways in which we do so:

Provide personalised care and support

At Crouched Friars, we provide personalised care and support to all of our residents in an attempt to make their lives at our care home comfortable, safe and homely.

We equip our team with the best training such that they can provide the highest quality of care to our residents.

At our home, we ensure that their physical and mental needs are met. We also incorporate hobby-based activities and outdoor activities to help them live their life to the fullest.

Respect our residents’ privacy

A care home is just like any other home where the privacy of each individual is respected. Our residents have their own spaces where they can enjoy quiet time, and lead autonomous lives.

Our staff takes the utmost care in giving our residents their privacy and work around their needs and desires.

Provide a safe space for expressing concerns

While we encourage our residents to express their needs and wants so that we are able to fulfil them. We also encourage them to voice their concerns and feel safe while doing so.

Our residents are able to tell us if they need something or if they prefer something to be done differently. We try our best to listen to and implement those changes as efficiently as possible.

Make way for independence and control over their own life

As much as we are always there to support our residents, we encourage them to be as independent as they can.

We also allow them to choose how they spend their day and honour their likes and dislikes.

Involve family members and loved ones

It is very important to keep in touch with the family members and loved ones of those in care.

We involve family members in our events, activities, and more. Additionally, we encourage regular visits. This helps our residents feel loved and cared for in our home.

Build confidence and self-esteem

Doing simple tasks on their own, engaging in hobbies and activities, going out on walks, going out for meals, and more slowly but surely builds the confidence of those in care.

Residents enjoying a cup of tea

At Crouched Friars, we help our residents gain confidence by encouraging them to be more self-reliant in their daily lives.

Home manager at Crouched Friars, Paulina Eagle, said: “It is of utmost importance to us that our residents lead a comfortable life at our home. We make sure they are living the best life possible through individualised care and support”.

People in care deserve fulfilling life just as anyone else and we do our part in making that a reality for our residents.
