Activities for Older Minds to Enjoy at Home

Here at Crouched Friars Residential Home, we know how important it is for older people to be able to enjoy different activities regularly.

As we all get older, it can feel like the mind becomes less sharp, and it becomes more challenging to keep up with younger members of the family. However, no one should ever have to feel bored or isolated as this can lead to feelings of depression. To improve wellbeing and exercise the mind, it’s vital to enjoy different experiences and keep the mind active.

We regularly host different activity sessions and welcome entertainers to the home and seen first-hand the positive impact this can have on older individuals. So, if you or your loved ones are looking for inspiration on what to enjoy at home, here are some activities that are regularly enjoyed by our residents.

Arts and crafts

Enjoying different crafts is a fantastic way to stimulate the mind. It inspires creativity and offers people an excellent opportunity to express themselves. Whether it’s knitting and sewing or simple painting and colouring, an arty activity can provide a therapeutic experience.

During the art sessions at Crouched Friars, we also encourage plenty of socialisation. From working on a project together to just keeping each other company – there’s nothing better than being creative with others.

Reading

There’s no better exercise for the mind than reading. Conjuring up completely different worlds in your head and enjoying tales from different times and places is an incredible experience that boosts moods and emotions.

Our residents have access to a range of stories, providing them with the perfect escapism. Many enjoy revisiting their favourite tales, while others love discussing their books and chatting through their favourite parts.

Journaling and scrapbooking

One of the favourite pastimes at Crouched Friars is journaling and scrapbooking. Many residents enjoy writing down their thoughts, feelings and reflecting on the day. By doing this, they find themselves feeling more positive as they’ve spent time focusing on the things they feel grateful for.

Music

We’re always playing music at the home! It can offer such a therapeutic experience, bringing back past memories and reminding people of their favourite songs. So, why not put the record player on? Sing and dance or just hum and tap along to favourite songs and albums.

Stay connected

Nothing quite beats interaction with loved ones when it comes to exercising the mind. Physical catch-ups will always be more meaningful, but it doesn’t have to be face to face. Video calls are a regular occurrence at Crouched Friars as it gives residents the chances to catch up with the most meaningful figures in their lives.

These are just a few examples of things you can enjoy while at home, but there’s plenty more to explore. From board games to seated exercise sessions, the potential is endless!
