Summer celebrations at Crouched Friars

We recently hosted our inaugural summer fete at our care home in Colcheter, Crouched Friars. It was a huge success which you will know if you’ve been following us on Facebook!  After a few of years of not being able to invite guests into the home, this event was so important to everyone at the home.

The fete was organised by our fantastic Activities Coordinator Yvonne.

The event welcomed family members, and the community, to enjoy the traditional fete in our lovely gardens. Helped by the glorious weather, we filled the grounds with inflatables and decorations for all ages to enjoy. Residents particularly enjoyed the singing, dancing and food. We even invited a local ice cream van for added nostalgia and a tasty treat for everyone at the fete.

In the run up to the event, residents got creative as they up-cycled clothing ready for the party. We all enjoyed bringing out the sparkles and other DIY bits and bobs.

The importance of social interaction in a care home

As well as our regular activities, events such as this provide a real sense of purpose for our residents. Socialising with family and friends provides mental and physical stimulation and emotional engagement which is hugely beneficial.

Lots of  studies that prove that social interaction provides psychological and physical benefits to individuals but at Crouched Friars we don’t necessarily need those studies! We can see the benefits first hand; the residents at our care home in Colchester feel part of a community and they certainly love getting involved.

Our care team also loves to take part when we have big get-togethers like this, especially when the weather is so amazing.  It is lovely for them to celebrate with our residents, and spend time with family and friends. It also supports a positive team environment, and means we get to know our residents that little bit better.

Feedback from everyone has been very positive, so we are planning on making this a yearly event in our busy calendar and it will be an event we will all look forward to!

What do you think we should do next year?
